Karat (قِيرَاطٌ)

أصول الفقه

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

A certain measure that is one out of twenty-four parts.

الشرح المختصر :

"Qeerāt" (karat): There are four kinds of measurement units: volume, weight, length, and number. They are all used to measure things and properties. Volume is for estimating the size, weight is for estimating the mass, length is for estimating the extent, and numbers are for counting units. The "qeerāt", however, has been used to measure different things; either weight, area, or a certain percentage that helps in dividing inheritance. In this respect, anything is divided into twenty-four "qeerāt", one of which equals one part out of twenty-four parts.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر :

"Qeerāt": a small measure that differs across countries. It is derived from "taqreet", which means giving little by little. It was said that it was an Arabicized term; in Syrian usage, "qeerāt" is one out of twenty-four parts.
