An ovine mammal covered with hair
A "mā‘iz" (goat) is an ovine mammal covered with hair, as opposed to the sheep, which is covered with wool. Hair, in this context, is what grows on the skin and is neither wool nor fur. "Mā‘iz" refers to both male and female goats, but the male is also called "tays", while the female is called "‘anz", "mā‘izah", and "ma‘zāh". Goats have two hollow horns, and they are mostly raised for their milk and meat.
"Mā‘iz": any ovine mammal whose body is covered with hair, as opposed to the sheep, which is covered with wool. It is derived from "ma‘az", which means toughness and sturdiness.
