unlettered (الْأُمِيّ)

التعريف :


A person who has not learnt reading and writing, even though he may memorise parts of the Qur'an and some hadiths.

المعنى الاصطلاحي :


A person who is incapable of reciting Sūrat al-Fātihah properly, neither from memory nor from the mus'haf (physical copy of the Qur’an), even if they can recite other surahs properly.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر :


"Ummi": a person who does not read or write. Derived from "umm" (mother), because one does not know anything after being delivered from their mother's womb.
