الشرح المختصر :

"Bareed" is a unit of measurement approved in the Shariah for measuring distances. It consists of four "farāsikh" (sing."farsakh"); one "farsakh" covers three miles. Thus, a "bareed" is 12 miles long. One mile covers four thousand steps. Therefore, the "bareed", according to modern measurements, is 19,312 meters long. According to an opinion of Māliki fiqh one "bareed" equals two "farsakhs" (i.e. 6 miles).
