parts (الأَبْعَاض)

parts (الأَبْعَاض)

العقيدة أصول الفقه

التعريف :

This term is the plural form of baꜤḍ, which means ‘a part of’. Negating the parts by the muꜤaṭṭilah means negating some of the confirmed attributes of God, such as his hand, face, shin, foot, etc. So as to disclaim any comparability or physicality of Him.

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

Anything liable to be separated from the whole.

الشرح المختصر :

"Ab‘ād" (parts): Ahl-us-Sunnah affirm the Face, the Hand, the Foot, and other attributes for Allah, yet they do not call them "ab‘ād". As for human beings, they are considered parts, organs, etc. However, when it comes to Allah, they are considered attributes that Allah has established for Himself, or that have been established for Him by His Messenger Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. So we should not think about their details with our limited minds. Instead, we should believe in them and affirm them just as they were revealed.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر :

"Ab‘ād" (sing. ba‘d): parts. Opposite: "Kull" (whole).
