A small mountain at which the pilgrim performing Hajj or ‘Umrah starts his "sa‘y" (walking rapidly back and forth between Mounts Safa and Marwah).
"Safa" is an elevated rocky hill at the foot of Mount Abu Qubays east of Masjid al-Harām. If someone stands on Safa, he would be in line with the Black Stone. It is at Safa that the pilgrim starts his "sa‘y" between Mounts Safa and Marwah.
"Safa" (sing. safāh): the wide, hard flat stone which nothing grows on. It is derived from "safā’", which means purity.
The place where the saꜤī ritual starts. A pilgrim or one performing the umrah starts there, going towards al-Marwah and returning to it. The saꜤī means going to and fro between these two places seven times as a duty of the hajj and the umrah.
