Refusing to accept the truth out of arrogance; despising people and treating them as inferiors.
"Kibr" (arrogance) is an ugly trait that is typical of devils. It is an internal disposition that makes one feel that he is above others in terms of perfection. His feeling is reflected in his actions by despising people, boasting over them, refusing to accept the truth which they put forward, and so on. "Kibr" is of degrees: 1. "Kibr" toward Allah, the Exalted: it is the worst type of arrogance manifested by the disbelievers and atheists. 2. "Kibr" toward Allah's commands: which is shown by some sinners, such as refraining from praying in the mosque because only the poor go there. 3. "Kibr" toward people: by looking down on people and treating them with disdain for any reason such as wealth, beauty, social status, etc. "Kibr" has several manifestations: 1. Refusing to accept the truth or to comply with divine commands. 2. Admiring one's own beauty, wealth, or social status so much that one becomes conceited and boastful. 3. "Kibr" in dealing with others. For example, an arrogant person likes that others stand up to receive him, walks with a swagger, avoids sitting with poor people, eats while reclining, wears clothes that reach below the ankles (this applies to males only), and others.
"Kibr": arrogance, haughtiness. Also called "takabbur" and "istikbār". Opposite: "tawādu‘" (humbleness) and "tasāghur" (humility). Original meaning: refraining and not yielding. Other meanings: the main part of something.
Self-importance, egotism, arrogance, disdain of others and refusal to accept the truth.
