Abu Mahdhūrah,(may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The earliest appointed time is pleasing to Allah; the middle of time is subject to the mercy of Allah; and the latter part of time is subject to the forgiveness of Allah.”

شرح الحديث :

When a slave offers the prayer at the beginning of its time, he wins the pleasure of his Lord. In fact, no other pleasure is comparable to it, and it earns one such a great reward that no one may expect. Allah says in the Qur’an: ﴿...Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him...﴾ [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 100] And Allah, the Almighty, will say to the people of Paradise: “O people of Paradise!” They will say: “Labbayk, O our Lord, and Sa‘dayk!” Allah will say: “Are you pleased?” They will say: “Why should we not be pleased since You have given us what You have not given to anyone among Your creation?” Allah will say: “I will give you something better than that.” They will reply: “O our Lord, what is better than that?” Allah will say: “I will bestow My pleasure upon you so that I will never be displeased with you” [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]. Indeed, the pleasure of Allah, the Almighty, is the supreme bliss. Performing prayer between the earliest and latter parts of its due time earns one the mercy and grace of his Lord. However, this is lower than the rank of pleasure. And when a person performs prayer at the latter part of its time, he wins the forgiveness of Allah, which is to be granted when there is negligence or shortcoming. The shortcoming here is regarded as such in comparison to offering the prayer at its earliest due time. Imām Ash-Shāfi‘i said: “The pleasure of Allah is dearer to us than His forgiveness, which seems to be granted to the negligent.” The desirability of performing the prayer at its earliest appointed time is the basic rule. However, there may be cases in which it is better to delay the prayer beyond the beginning of its time. For example, when the weather is very hot, we are recommended to delay the performance of the Zhuhr prayer until it becomes a bit colder. It is also recommended to delay the ‘Ishā' prayer beyond the earliest time, as established in the Prophet’s Sunnah. This Hadīth is weak, and we can rely on another Hadīth instead of it. In the other Hadīth: “Which deed is best?” He said: “Performing prayer at the appointed time.”
