الإيلاء
‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) swore to keep away from his wives and declared the lawful unlawful for himself, so he made something permissible forbidden; yet he offered expiation for having sworn to do so.
عن عائشة، قالت: «آلَى رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- مِنْ نسائه، وحَرَّمَ، فَجَعَل الحرام حَلَالا، وجَعَلَ في اليَمِينِ كَفَّارَة».
شرح الحديث :
In this Hadīth, ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him): 1- Swore to remain away from his wives for a month. 2- Forbade "the lawful honey" for himself. According to another opinion, the thing that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) forbade for himself was to have intercourse with his slave girl Māriyah. 3- Expiated for his oath in order to make allowable what he had prohibited himself from. This is to comply with the Qur’anic verses in which Allah, the Almighty, says: {O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths.} [Sūrat At-Tahrīm: 1-2]
