‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: One day I was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: "O boy, I shall teach you some words: Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, ask Allah; and if you seek help, seek help from Allah. And know that if the Ummah were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.” In another narration: "Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. Recognize and acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will remember you in times of adversity. And know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you, and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease."

In this noble Hadīth, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) offers invaluable advice to this boy, Ibn ‘Abbās, exhorting him to observe the commands and prohibitions of Allah, the Almighty, at all times and in every situation. Moreover, the Prophet seeks to straighten his creed while still a child, telling him that there is no creator but Allah; that only He is able to do things and manage all affairs; that there is no mediator between Allah and His servants; and that He alone should be resorted to for relief at times of hardship and for forgiveness at times of punishment. The Prophet also instill in Ibn ‘Abbās's soul the belief in the divine destiny and predestination. Everything occurs according to His decree and will.
