"Bayāt" (night attack) means attacking the disbelievers at night while they are unaware. What is intended by disbelievers are those whom the message of Islam has reached but they rejected it and refused to pay the "jizyah" (tax), and there was no covenant of protection or truce between them and the Muslims.
