Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) recited Sūrat al-Kāfirūn and Sūrat al-Ikhlās in the two Rak‘ahs of Fajr.
This Hadīth sheds light on the Prophet’s, may Allāh's peace and blessings be upon him, guidance regarding the Qur’an’s recitation in the regular Sunnah of the Fajr prayer. He used to recite Sūrat al-Kāfirūn in the first Rak‘ah and Sūrat al-Ikhlās in the second. His words "he recited in the two Rak‘ahs of the Fajr" refer to the Sunnah of the Fajr prayer, which is well known by this name. In mentioning Sūrat al-Kāfirūn and Sūrat al-Ikhlās, he meant that they were recited after Sūrat al-Fātihah; however, the narrator did not mention Sūrat al-Fātihah because its recitation is known. This approach is common in many of the reports on the Prophet’s statements and actions where other Sūrahs are mentioned, but not the well-known Sūrat al-Fātihah, which affirms the obligation to recite it in prayer.
