A thief was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). The people said: "He has stolen." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''I do not think that he has stolen.'' However, the man said: ''Yes, I did, O Messenger of Allah.'' So, he (the Prophet) said: ''Go and cut him off and then cauterize him. Then bring him back to me.'' The man was taken, (his hand) cut off, cauterized, and then he was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who said to him: ''Repent to Allah.'' The man said: ''I have repented to Allah.'' He (the Prophet) said: ''May Allah accept your repentance,'' or "O Allah, accept his repentance."

شرح الحديث :

This Hadīth informs that a man who had committed theft was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who wanted to verify whether the man had committed that crime or not. When it became clear to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) through the man's confession that he had stolen, he ordered that his hand be cut off and cauterized so that the wound would stop bleeding. He then asked him to repent to Allah. The man did, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prayed that Allah accepts his repentance.
