Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill the old men of the polytheists and spare their children."

شرح الحديث :

Assuming that this Hadīth is authentic (which it is not), then it states a ruling concerning the fight between Muslims and disbelievers; namely, the command to kill the older men from among the disbelievers and those over forty years of age or so, which also applies to those who have reached puberty, for the following reasons: - They are strong and can fight the Muslims. - The possibility that they would revert to Islam is too weak. - They may betray the Muslims if their lives are spared. On the other hand, the children and young people who have not reached adulthood may be impressed by the rulings of Islam as a result of mixing with the Muslims while in captivity. As to the old polytheists who actively engage in fighting against the Muslims, there is no difference of opinion among scholars that it is permissible to kill them.
