‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''Do not exaggerate in praising me as Christians praised the son of Mariyam, for I am only a slave. So, call me the slave of Allah and His Messenger."
Out of his concern for pristine monotheism and fear that his followers would lapse into associating partners with Allah like previous nations, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned Muslims against exaggerating in praising him, as Christians did concerning Jesus by giving him divine attributes and calling him the son of God, thus falling into polytheism. In this respect, Allah says: ﴿They have certainly disbelieved who say: "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said: "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers﴾ [Sūrat al-Mā'idah: 72]. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then said: "for I am only a slave. So, call me the slave of Allah and His Messenger." i.e. describe me as the salve of Allah and the carrier of His message, just as He, Exalted be He, described me. Do not transgress the limits by raising me to a station of divinity or lordship as the Christians did with regard to Jesus. Divinity is exclusive to Allah alone. Despite this warning, there are Muslims who committed what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned of, so beware of being one of them.
