Yahya al-Māzini (may Allah have mercy upon him) reported: I witnessed ‘Amr ibn Abu Hasan asking ‘Abdullāh ibn Zayd about the Prophet's ablution. So, he ordered for a small container of water to be brought, and performed ablution like that performed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He poured water from the container over his hands and washed his hands thrice. Then he dipped his hands into the container and rinsed his mouth, sniffed water and blew it out thrice, using three handfuls of water. Then he dipped his hands into the container and washed his face thrice, then dipped his hands into the container again and washed them both up to the elbows twice, then dipped his hands into the container and wiped over his head, wiping from front to back, and vice versa once, then he washed his feet." Another narration states: "He wiped his head starting from the front and reaching back to his nape, then returned them whence he started." Another narration reads: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, so we brought out for him water in a container made of copper.”
Due to the keenness of the righteous predecessors (may Allah have mercy upon them) to follow the Sunnah, they used to wonder about the manner the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) performed his acts of worship, in order to follow his example. In this Hadīth, ‘Amr ibn Yahya al-Māzini reports from his father that he witnessed his paternal uncle ‘Amr ibn Abu Hasan asking ‘Abdullāh ibn Zayd – one of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) - about the way the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. ‘Abdullāh wanted to explain it in a practical manner to ensure a faster comprehension, a more detailed depiction, and deep establishment in their minds. So, he asked for a container of water and began firstly with washing his hands, since they are the tool for washing and taking water. He tilted the container and washed his hands thrice. Then he dipped his hands into the container and took out three handfuls, rinsing his mouth and sniffing water into and out of his nostrils with each handful. Then he took a handful of water from the container and washed his face thrice, then he took a handful of water from it and washed each hand up to the elbow twice, then he dipped his hands into the container and wiped his head with his hands beginning from the front of his head until they reached his nape (the uppermost part of the neck) then he brought them back to the place from where he started. He did this to wipe the hair forward and backward, so that the wiping includes the outer and inner parts. Then he washed his feet up to the ankles. ‘Abdullāh ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) clarified that this was the way the ablution was performed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he visited them. At that time, they brought him water in a container made of copper so that he could perform ablution therefrom. ‘Abdullāh clarified that to affirm that he was absolutely certain of the matter.
