Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man's prayer in congregation is twenty-something times more superior (in reward) to his prayer in his market (workplace) or his home. When one perfects ablution then goes out to the mosque, seeking nothing but prayer and nothing motivating him except prayer, then for every step he takes he is raised one degree and one sin is erased for him until he enters the mosque. When he enters the mosque, he remains in prayer as long as prayer is what keeps him therein, and the angels will keep invoking the blessings of Allah on him as long as he is in his place of worship, saying: 'O Allah, have mercy on him! O Allah, forgive him! O Allah, accept his repentance!' as long as he does not harm anyone therein and does not break his ablution."
شرح الحديث :
When a person prays in the mosque with the congregation, this prayer is twenty-seven times better than his prayer at home or in his workplace, because the prayer with the congregation is a fulfillment of what Allah made obligatory. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the reason for that, saying that if a person performs ablution perfectly at home then sets out to the mosque with the sole intention of praying, then with every step he takes he is raised one degree and one of his sins is erased, whether he is near the mosque or far from it, and this is a tremendous favor. This continues until he enters the mosque and prays (the two Rak‘ahs of greeting the mosque). When he sits waiting for the (obligatory) prayer, he is considered to be in prayer as long as he is waiting for the prayer to begin, and this is also a tremendous favor. If you remain waiting for the prayer for a long period of time, sitting and not praying, after performing the mosque-greeting prayer and any other voluntary prayers, then the reward for prayer will be counted for you. The angels will supplicate for you as long as you remain sitting in the spot that you prayed in, saying: "O Allah, bless him! O Allah, forgive him! O Allah, be merciful to him! O Allah, accept his repentance!" and this is a tremendous favor as well for whoever comes to the mosque with such an intention and performs such deeds.
