‘Atiyyah ibn ‘Urwah As-Sa‘di (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The slave does not attain the rank of the pious until he abandons that which is permissible as a precaution against committing that which is impermissible."
One will not reach the level of the pious until he abandons excess in lawful things as a precaution against committing what is unlawful. Likewise, if there are doubts whether something is permissible or prohibited and it is difficult to make a distinction, then it is from the perfection of piety that one abandons the permissible for fear of committing the prohibited. This Hadīth has a weak chain of narration, however, its meaning is correct, due to the agreed-upon Hadīth where the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, the lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters which many people do not know. Thus, he who avoids doubtful matters has absolved his religion and honor, and whoever indulges in them has indulged in the unlawful. It is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to preserved sanctuary, all but grazing therein. Verily, every king has a sanctuary, and, verily, the sanctuary of Allah is what He has made unlawful. Verily, there lies within the body a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Verily, it is the heart."
