A female slave impregnated by her master who then gave birth, whether the newborn was alive or dead.
الشرح المختصر
"Umm al-walad" (mother of the child) is a type of slave. A female slave becomes “umm al-walad” by giving birth, whether the newborn was alive or dead. If it was dead, it is still considered a child, and the rules of childbirth is applied, such as post-natal bleeding, and waiting a specific period of time, etc.
