When a slave moves from the status of slavery to that of freedom.
“‘Atāqah” (emancipation) is the status of a slave who has been freed from slavery by his master. This grants the slave a new legal status, that of no longer being owned by anyone. Such freedom qualifies the slave for the rights of witnessing, guardianship, and other legal rights which they were not entitled to under slavery.
“‘Atāqah”: freedom. Opposite: “riqq” (servitude) and “‘uboodiyyah” (slavery). Original meaning: release, ridding. Other meanings: reaching a destination, achieving an objective, oldness, strength, reform, and proving.
