The description given to an item to denote that it has monetary value and can be utilized in a lawful manner approved by the Shariah.
"Maaliyyah" (monetary value) is an Islamic description given to something, be it a commodity or a utility, by which it can be considered as wealth, such as gold, silver, livestock, and so on. The basis upon which something can be considered as "maaliyyah" is two things: 1. That the thing has value among the people. 2. That this value is a result of it being something that people benefit from in a legitimate manner. There is no value for any benefit that is illegitimate in Islam.
"Maaliyyah": derived from "maal", which is the collective name given to everything that has a value and can be owned, whether it is money, animals, real estate, etc.
