al-iftirāsh (الاِفْتِرَاشُ)

التعريف :
To put one’s arms on the floor during prostration in prayer or at other times.
المعنى الاصطلاحي :
The sitting position in prayer wherein the worshiper bends his left foot underneath him and sits on it and erects his right foot so that his heel is raised and the bottom of his toes are on the ground with the toe tips pointing to the "qiblah" (prayer direction).
الشرح المختصر :
"Iftirāsh" (sitting posture in prayer) is a sitting posture legislated in prayer. Its manner is that the worshiper keeps his right foot vertical, resting on its toes so that they face the "qiblah" (prayer direction), and bends his left leg underneath him so that the back of the left foot is resting on the ground and he is sitting on the bottom of the foot. This is the recommended sitting posture in the first "tashahhud" in the 3 unit (rak‘ah) and 4 unit prayers, between the two prostrations, and in the last Tashahhud in the 2 unit prayer.
التعريف اللغوي المختصر :
"Iftirāsh": spreading something and sitting on it. Derived from "farsh", which means spreading. "Firāsh": bed, what one spreads to sit or sleep on.
