المعنى الاصطلاحي

A state in which a woman refrains from applying all means of adornment and beauty that attract men to her for a certain period of time after her husband's death.

الشرح المختصر

"Ihdād" (mourning) is the state in which the woman whose husband has died gives up the things that display her beauty or attract men to her. A woman, in this case, refrains from all kinds of adornments that encourage men to marry her, such as wearing attractive clothes, perfume, jewelry, kohl, henna, and the like. A woman should avoid all adornments that arouse men's sexual desire as long as she is in her prescribed mourning period. This also includes staying and sleeping at her house where she received the news of her husband’s death. The Shariah ordained the woman to mourn her husband's death for four months and ten days. However, it is permissible for the woman to mourn the death of other relatives for three days only.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر

"Ihdād": giving up or refraining from something, as happens when a woman gives up her charms and adornments after her husband's death. Derived from "haddi", which means barring and isolating two things.

التعريف

A woman refrains from staying overnight anywhere other than her husband’s home, and refrains from wearing makeup and adornments, for a specific period in a certain situation.
