Each behavior that discourages others from practicing Islam or any Islamic teachings.
Islam is a religion of ease, wisdom and leniency. It is midway between uncouth people of harshness who distort its pure image, and those who exaggerate in taking leniency and concessions. "Tanfeer" involves physical or verbal abuse that drives others away from Islam, deliberately or inadvertently. This usually occurs due to ignorance about Islam and its principles; bad moral behavior; and non-compliance with the Prophet's way of life, and so on. Forms of "tanfeer": 1. A preacher (Da‘iyah) being harsh toward people, and not being kind and lenient. 2. Causing people to lose hope in the mercy of Allah, and discouraging them from repenting. Looking down upon sinners, chasing them away, and to avoid socializing with them. 3. Being harsh in enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, thus losing a sense of wisdom. 4. Not practicing what one preaches, and vice versa, e.g. someone enjoins people to do good, while he acts the otherwise (sinfully).
"Tanfeer": to push away, to repel. Original meaning: impelling someone to run away and escape.
To treat people rudely and discourteously, causing their alienation from Islam and strained relations.
