the Torah (التَّوْرَاة)

العقيدة

التعريف :

The book God revealed to Moses (peace be upon him) and charged the children of Israel to keep it intact, but they made changes in it and distorted it. The Torah is a Hebrew word which means ‘the law’, or ‘the constitution’. The Jews apply the name to five books which they believe that Moses wrote with his own hand. These are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

The Book that Allah, the Almighty, sent down to Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, as light and guidance to the Children of Israel.

الشرح المختصر :

"Tawraah" (Torah) is one of the heavenly books that Allah, the Almighty, revealed on Musa (Moses), peace be upon him. The "Tawraah", according to the Jewish beliefs, refers to five books that Musa, peace be upon him, wrote with his own hands. They call it "Pentateuch", after "penta", which is a Greek word meaning "five", i.e. the five books. These five books are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The Torah is abrogated, and it is not permissible to apply it, because Allah informed us that the Qur’an has authority over the previous books, as Allah says (what means): {And We have revealed to you [O Muhammad] the Book in truth, confirming what preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it.} [Al-Maa'idah: 48] Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, also informed us that the People of the Book from the Jews and the Christians altered and changed their books, and added to His Words what does not belong to them out of falsehood and fabrication.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر :

"Tawraah": brightness, light. Original meaning: law.
