المعنى الاصطلاحي :

The recitation of the entire Qur’an by the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, twice before Jibreel, peace be upon him, in the year the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, passed away.

الشرح المختصر :

"Al-‘Ardat al-Akheerah" (the Prophet's last revision of the Qur’an with Jibreel) is the last recitation made by the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, before Jibreel, peace be upon him, during the final Ramadan in the Prophet's life. This was done in order to confirm the memorization of the Qur’an. It is the reading that wehave now in the "mus'haf" (physical copy of the Qur’an), which the rightly-guided Caliphs ordered to transcribe in the "mus'hafs", and which ‘Uthmān united the people on by the Companions's unanimity. This last recitation was like a final revision of the Qur’an, for the Prophet read the Qur’an two times. Thus, the instituted parts of the Qur’an, which were not abrogated, were confirmed, whereas the abrogated parts were left out. The parts which were recorded in this last recitation represent the "muhkam" (precise) Qur’an that is recited as an act of worship until the Day of Resurrection. The parts that were not recorded are either abrogated Qur’an or not Qur’an at all.
