Claiming knowledge of the unseen by observing movements of the birds, their sounds and the like.
A type of soothsaying and sorcery. It is a belief that the acts of birds, their names, their places, their descriptions, etc. indicate what is going to happen in the future of good or evil. So, one may become optimistic or pessimistic based on the mere movement of birds and the like. Some, for example, believe that if an owl stands on someone's house, such a person will soon die. The science of seeking omen from birds, by looking at birds guts, its structure and movement, is of no avail. It is an affirmed fact in our Shari`ah that no one knows the unseen except Allah.
"'Iyaafah": means disliking or hating something. It also means: rebuke, repulsion, dispatch. It can also be used to mean: taking birds as a bad or good omen. Other meanings: prediction, assumption and hovering around something.
A form of auguring through the observation of the flight of birds and movement of animals, and to treat their names, sounds and movement as good omen.
