المعنى الاصطلاحي

The termination of the torment of Hell, the expiration of its term, and the end of the period of its existence.

الشرح المختصر

“Fanā’-un-Nār” (extinction of Hell)": Scholars held different opinions on the permanence of Hell, the continuity of its punishment, and the eternal abidance of its people therein. There are eight scholarly opinions in this regard, the most important of which are three: 1. Hell, like Paradise, is eternal and will not come to an end. Allah, the Almighty, will take out of it whomever He wills. Yet, the disbelievers will abide in it eternally. 2. Hell will come to an end. Allah will take out of it whomever He wills, then He will let it last for as long as He wills, then He will exterminate it, since He has fixed for it a time limit not to be exceeded. 3. We should refrain from discussing this and similar issues and not go beyond the statement of Allah, the Almighty: {Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He wills.} [Hūd: 107] The correct opinion is that Hell is like Paradise; it will not come to an end. This is the opinion of the majority of the scholars of Ahl-us-Sunnah wa al Jamā‘ah. Some scholars reported that this is unanimously agreed upon. The Shariah texts clearly demonstrate that the dwellers of Hellfire will eternally abide therein. They will never die in Hell in order to not be relieved by death, nor will it stop afflicting them. Thus, nothing of the punishment of Hellfire will be alleviated for them, nor will they get out of it. Instead, they will remain tortured therein endlessly. As for the disobedient believers, they will get out of it eventually.

التعريف

That the fire of hell will be extinct. This is the view of some scholars who maintain that it does not last forever. The correct view is that it is everlasting.
