A contract between a slave and his master which states that the slave will pay an amount of money to his master in installments in exchange for his freedom.
"Kitābah" is a contract or an agreement between a slave and his master who owns him. The master agrees that his slave shall pay him an amount of money in installments over a specific time period. When the slave makes all the payments, he becomes free. It was called "kitābah", or writing, because it is as if the slave commits himself in writing to pay his worth to his master, and his master commits himself in writing to manumit him. This is also called "mukātabah", and the slave is called "mukātab".
"Kitābah": writing, something written. "Kitābah, "mukātabah", and "takātub": mutual written correspondence between two people. Original meaning: joining together, combining.
