‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the sermon (to be said in case) of need: "Praise be to Allah. We seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge with Him from the evils of our souls. Whoever Allah guides none can lead astray, and whoever Allah leads astray none can guide. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. {O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 1] {O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].} [Sūrat Āl-‘Imrān: 102] {O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.} [Sūrat al-Ahzāb: 70-71]"

This Hadīth of Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) recommends delivering this comprehensive sermon, in which Allah is praised, His help and protection from evil are sought, and such noble verses of the Qur'an are recited. One should say it before addressing people with knowledge, when teaching them the Qur'an, the Sunnah, jurisprudence, or giving them admonition. This sermon is not said only on the occasion of marriage; rather it can be said on any occasion to make it blessed, and to have a good impact on what comes after it. It is an affirmed act of the Sunnah.
