Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''The first deficiency that occurred within the Children of Israel was that a man (of them) would meet another man and say: 'O so-and-so, fear Allah, and abandon what you are doing, for it is not lawful for you.' He would then meet him the next day, still doing the same sin, without this preventing him from eating with him, drinking with him, or sitting with him. When they did so, Allah mixed their hearts with each other (i.e. blackened the hearts of all of them, and made them all the same in terms of evil and wickedness). He then recited the verses: {Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mariyam (Mary). That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed. They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing. You see many of them becoming allies of those who disbelieved [i.e., the polytheists]. How wretched is that which they have put forth for themselves. And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient} [Al-Mā'idah: 78-81]. He then said: ''Nay, by Allah! you must enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, prevent the wrongdoer, force him to adhere to what is right, and restrict him to doing what is right. Otherwise, Allah will mix your hearts with each other and will curse you as he cursed them.'' In another narration: ''When the Children of Israel slipped into sins, their scholars forbade them but they did not comply. However, their scholars shared their sessions, food, and drink. Therefore, Allah, the Almighty, mixed their hearts with each other and cursed them through the tongue of Dawūd and ‘Īsa, the son of Maryam, for they disobeyed and transgressed.'' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat up and said: “No, by the One in whose Hands my soul is, until you force them to adhere to what is right.”

The Children of Israel first became deficient in religion as a result of their reaction to sinning. A man would meet a sinner, so he would advise him to fear Allah and give up the sins he committed. On the next day, the advisor would again meet the sinner, but this would not prevent him from eating, drinking, and socializing with him. When the Children of Israel did so, Allah mixed their hearts (meaning that the good and bad people were made alike). Thus, a common curse befell them. In this respect, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) cited these verses: {Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient} [Al-Mā’idah: 78-81]. So, for Muslims, either they command what is good, forbid what is evil, stop oppressors from acting unjustly by restraining them verbally if not physically, and push and confine them to the right path, or else Allah will mix their hearts and expel them from His mercy, just as He expelled the Children of Israel.
