Abu Umāmah Suday ibn ‘Ijlān al-Bāhili (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) give a sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage and that he said: "Fear Allah, pray your five, fast your month, give Zakah from your wealth, and obey your rulers, and you will enter your Lord's Paradise."
عن أبي أمامة صُدَيّ بن عجلان الباهلي -رضي الله عنه- سمعت رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يخطب في حجة الوداع، فقال: « اتقوا الله وصلَّوا خَمْسَكُمْ، وصوموا شهركم، وأَدُّوا زكاة أموالِكم، وأطيعوا أُمَرَاءَكُمْ تدخلوا جنة ربكم ».
شرح الحديث :
This and other similar Hadīths urge fear of Allah, by observing His commands and prohibitions. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made this statement late in his life, during his sermon at the Farewell Hajj in which he gave the people numerous pieces of advice and reminded them of their rights and duties. Among these is the fear of Allah, the Almighty. He said: "O mankind, fear your Lord." This is exactly the verse that reads: {O mankind, fear your Lord} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 1]. So, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded all people to fear their Lord Who created them and provided them with innumerable blessings. In another Hadīth reported by Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), a man came to the Prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah, give me advice!" He said: "Adhere to the fear of Allah, for it combines all goodness." He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "The most thing that causes people to enter Paradise is the fear of Allah and good character." In yet another Hadīth, he said: "Fear Allah, pray your five, fast your month, give Zakah from your wealth, and obey your rulers, and you will enter your Lord's Paradise." This Hadīth contains three of the pillars of Islam, but it does not mention Hajj, for the former recur every day and every year and some people may find it hard to perform them; so, he gave specific advice regarding them. His statement "and obey your rulers" refers to caliphs, sultans, governors, and scholars. However, there should be no obedience to a created being if it involves disobedience to the Creator.
