المعنى الاصطلاحي :

It is an inheritance issue traced back to `Umar ibn al-Khattaab, may Allah be pleased with him, concerning a husband or a wife, plus two parents.

الشرح المختصر :

The "`Umariyyah" (the ʿUmari Issue) is an inheritance issue ascribed to `Umar ibn al-Khattaab, may Allah be pleased with him, because he was the first to pass a judgment concerning it, such that he gave a third of the remainder to the mother. This inheritance issue involves two possibilities. Scholars agreed that: 1. The husband's share is 1/2, the mother's share is the third of the remainder: 1/6, and the father's share is 2/6. 2. The wife's share is 1/4, the mother's share is the third of the remainder: 1/4, and the father's share is 1/2. Therefore, in both cases, the mother is entitled to one third of what remains after the husband or the wife takes their assigned share. The majority of the jurists refer to these two formulas as "`Umari issues". They are likewise called "gharrawi questions" due to their popularity, like a luminous star. They are finally called "ghareebataan" because they are unique and have no equivalent examples.
