التعريف :
To sight the new moon as it appears at the beginning of a lunar month.
المعنى الاصطلاحي :
Sighting the crescent with the eye after sunset on the 29th of the lunar month by a reliable person whose testimony is accepted.
الشرح المختصر :
"Ru’yat al-hilāl" (Sighting the crescent) is of two types: 1. "Ru’yah" (sighting) with the naked eye without the aid of equipment. 2. "Ru’yah" with the aid of special equipment, such as astronomical devices. What is required is to sight the crescent with the naked eye. As for using modern equipment such as telescopes, it is permissible but not obligatory.
