شرح الحديث :

The Hadīth brings attention to a critical matter related to interaction with the rulers. It refers to the oppression of the rulers and their monopoly of public wealth. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) foretold that there will be rulers who monopolize the wealth of Muslims and spend it as they wish, depriving the Muslims of their rights thereof. It is selfishness and oppression on the part of those rulers, to monopolize the wealth that the Muslims have a right to and keep it all for themselves. However, the Companions sought the Prophetic guidance concerning their actions, not the actions of the oppressors. They said: "What do you order us to do then?" This expresses their genuine and deep understanding. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Fulfill your duty." i.e. do not let their monopoly of wealth prevent you from fulfilling your obligations towards them, such as obeying them without stirring up discord or falling therein. Rather, you should have patience and obey them; and do not dispute their authority, which Allah has given them. "And ask Allah for your rights. "i.e. seek your due rights from Allah by asking Him to guide them, so that they may give you your rights. This guidance displays the wisdom of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) as he was aware that people are incapable of patience concerning their rights, and that they will not be content with anyone who withholds their rights. However, he guided them to what entails good and benefit, besides warding off evil and discord. All of these ends are achievable as long as we fulfill our responsibility towards them, which includes obeying them without disputing their authority, and that we ask Allah for what is due for us.
