‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) in a small tent and we were about forty men. He said: "Would it please you to be one-fourth of the inhabitants of Paradise?" We said: 'Yes.' He then said: "Would it please you to be one-third of the inhabitants of Paradise?" We said: 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) then said: "By the One in Whose hand the life of Muhammad is! I hope that you will constitute one half of the inhabitants of Paradise; and that is because none would be admitted into Paradise except a Muslim, and in comparison to the polytheists, you are like a white hair on the skin of a black ox - or a black hair on the skin of a red ox."
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) sat with forty of his Companions in a small tent, and he asked them: "Would it please you to know that you will be one fourth of the inhabitants of Paradise?" They said: 'Yes.' He then said: "Would it please you to know that you will be one third of the inhabitants of Paradise?" They said: 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) then made an oath by His Lord and said: “I hope that you will constitute one-half of the inhabitants of Paradise.” The other half will be from the other nations. This is because only Muslims will enter Paradise, and Muslims compared to non-Muslims are like a white hair on the skin of a black ox, or a black hair on the skin of a red ox. The uncertainty about the exact word was on the narrator’s part.
