‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) at his death bed, and had next to him a utensil having water in it, in which he would insert his hand then wipe his face with water and say: "O Allah, help me to bear the agonies of death."
‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) at his death bed. He had a utensil containing water in which he would insert his hand then wipe his face with it and say: "O Allah, help me to bear the agonies of death." Meaning: Help me to endure them patiently, deliberately, and maintain my consciousness so that I would be aware of what I say, and so that the last thing I say would be the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. This is because the situation of death is one of intense horror and awe, and if Allah does not support you with patience therein, you are in great danger. Hence, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: “O Allah, help me to bear the agonies of death.” In another narration, he was saying: “There is no god but Allah! Indeed, death has real agonies!” [Al-Bukhāri] The Prophet said the truth, as Allah, the Almighty, says (what means): ﴿And the agony of death will come in truth.﴾ [Sūrat Qāf: 19]
