المعنى الاصطلاحي

Demanding verbally from someone not to do something in an authoritative manner.

الشرح المختصر

"Nahy" (forbiddance/prohibition) is to verbally command someone not to do something. This must come from someone in a higher position, like when Allah forbids His slaves, or when a father forbids his child. In principle, "nahy" is "tahreem" (making something unlawful), unless there is an evidence that changes its meaning to "karāhah" (being unfavorable). The clearest form of "nahy" is to say: "Do not do so-and-so", besides other similar expressions. "Nahy" can be classified into multiple classifications based upon different considerations: 1. Based on the object of "nahy": a) "Nahy" of something in itself, such as forbidding the consumption of alcohol and the flesh of swine. b) "Nahy" due to an associated condition, such as forbidding selling grapes if one knows that they will be used for producing wine and forbidding prayer without ablution. Here the reason behind "nahy" is the associated condition. c) "Nahy" due to an external condition, such as forbidding ablution with usurped water. Such an external condition, the usurped water in this example, must be forbidden in all cases. 2. "Nahy" can be classified into "nahy tahreemi", which denotes unlawfulness and mandatory banning, and "nahy tanzeehi", which denotes unfavorability and choosing not to do that thing. 3. "Nahy" can be classified into multiple "nahy", when the forbiddance is related to many things, and single "nahy".

التعريف اللغوي المختصر

"Nahy": stopping, rebuking, preventing. Opposite: "amr" (command). Derived from "intihā’", which means stopping at a certain point. Other meanings: attainment, arrival, prohibition, rejection, dismissal.

التعريف

To verbally require someone in a lower status to refrain from doing something. Some use it to refer to any requirement to refrain from some action, whether from a superior or an inferior. Others put the condition that the one making the order is assuming superiority, even if he is not superior.
