Outsiders who are not relatives.
"Abā‘id" (non-relatives) are people who are not related through kinship. Kinship refers to common relations through birth, whether close, such as siblings and cousins, or distant, such as children of grand grandfathers, children of a grandfather's uncle, children of the same tribe, and so forth. So the term "abā‘id" includes every stranger who is not related to someone else through kinship ties. Causal relationships through suckling and marriage fall under this category of "abā‘id" as well.
Abā‘id (sing. ab‘ad): very distant. Original meaning: long distance between two things. Other meanings: non-relatives, i.e. outsiders who do not belong to one's family.
