Establishing that the goodness of things can be known by Shariah in detail and by reason in general, but recognizing the reward can not be ascertained except by Shariah.
“Tahseen” (recognition of goodness): “Husn” (good) is an attribute that describes acts and can be recognized through reason, innate inclination, or the Shariah. A person’s mind can determine something to be good. However, the “husn” recognized by reason and natural disposition entails no praise or dispraise, nor reward or punishment, unless it is proven by the Shariah to be so. So “tahseen”, according to Ahl-us-Sunnah, relies on the Shariah: the Qur’an and the Sunnah, as well as on reason. Whatever the Shariah declares abhorred, it is abhorred, and whatever it declares beautiful, it is so. The mere intellectual recognition of the goodness of certain acts does not yield a reward unless this is supported by a “shar‘i” proof.
“Tahseen”: adornment, beautification. Original meaning: ornament, beauty, purity.
To judge a hadith stating that it is of the ‘good’ grade.
