"Al-Jubbaa'iyyah" (A deviant sect) is one of the Mutazilite sects in Basra. They are followers of Abu `Ali Muhammad ibn `Abdul-Wahhaab al-Jubbaa'i, leader of the Mutazilite and chief of scholastic theologians at his time. He married al-Ash`ari's mother, and thus, al-Ash`ari became his student and learned the Mutazilite doctrine from him. Al-Jubbaa'i died in Basra on 303 A.H. Key beliefs of "al-Jubbaa'iyyah: 1. They claim that the Quran is created and that Allah speaks and creates His speech in the form of a body. 2. They deny Allah's Attributes and seeing Him by the eyes in the Hereafter. 3. They deny the Divine decree and claim that man is the creator of his own deeds. 4. They believe that there is a position between belief and disbelief and claim that one who commits a major sin is neither a believer nor a disbeliever. They add that the doer of major sins who dies before repenting shall abide in Hell eternally. 5.They deny the supernatural events that happen to the allies of Allah. 6. They claim that being intent on disbelief is considered disbelief and being intent on a major sin is considered a major sin. 7. Abu `Ali al-Jubbaa'i used to hold a neutral position with regard to preference of Abu Bakr over `Ali, may Allah be pleased with them. There are other corrupt and deviant beliefs embraced by this sect.
