المعنى الاصطلاحي

Obscurity and lack of clarity.

الشرح المختصر

"Ibhaam" (obscurity) means the obscurity of something and its lack of clarity in such a way that it cannot be identified or understood except by an external means. "Ibhaam" occurs in the texts of the Quran or Sunnah when the indication is unclear, problematic, undetailed, or unspecific. It also occurs in the speech of people when they say ambiguous statements that need to be clarified. "Ibhaam" is of two types: 1. "Ibhaam" related to words, like when the text that indicates a ruling includes obscure words. Such text is called "mubham" (obscure) or "mujmal" (lacking details). 2. "Ibhaam" related to meaning and significance, like when the Hadith's indication of the intended meaning is obscure to the point that its intent is not understood.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر

"Ibhaam": closing, concealing. Opposite: "bayaan", "wudooh", and "zhuhoor" (all three are synonyms meaning the state of being clear and apparent). It denotes something that is obscure and is not perceivable.
