الشرح المختصر :

"‘Awrah" (what must be covered of the body) is one of the affairs that the Legislator has given much importance to, and it comes under the general principle of protecting the honor. It is of two types: 1. The "‘awrah" within prayer, which is divided into two sections in terms of the one praying: a. Minor "‘awrah", such as the thigh for the man and hair for the woman and the private parts of the male child. b. Major "‘awrah": the private parts, both front and back. 2. The "‘awrah" outside of prayer, which is called the "‘awrah" of looking. It refers to the body parts that must be covered outside the prayer. It differs according to gender and age. For men, it is the part from the naval to the knee. As for women, there are three cases: 1. The entire body except the face and both hands when in the presence of a non-"mahram" (permanently unmarriageable kin). 2. The entire body except what is normally revealed during household chores, such as the head, neck and hands etc. when in the presence of a "mahram". 3. What is between the naval and the knee when in the presence of a woman.

التعريف اللغوي المختصر :

"‘Awrah": whatever one feels shy to expose, such as the private parts. It is derived from "‘awar", which means being unable to see, or it could be derived from "‘awaar", which means ugliness and deficiency.
