المعنى الاصطلاحي

The meaning that a word indicates without being explicitly expressed by the speaker.

الشرح المختصر

"Mafhoom" (implicit meaning) refers to the implicit meaning that is not explicitly expressed by the speaker, whereas the "mantooq" is the explicit meaning of the word. The "mafhoom" is of two types: 1. "Mafhoom muwāfaqah" (concordance meaning): It has two cases: a) The ruling applicable to the "mafhoom" is the same as the ruling applicable to the "mantooq". For instance, if the ruling applicable to the "mantooq" is "wujoob" (obligation), it applies to both. This case is called "lahn al-khitāb". b) The ruling applicable to the "mafhoom" is stronger than the ruling applicable to the "mantooq". For instance, if the ruling applicable to the "mantooq" is "tahreem" (prohibition) then the ruling applicable to the "mafhoom" is that it is more prohibited. This is called "qiyās al-awlā" and "fahw al-khitāb". 2. "Mafhoom al-mukhālafah (antithetical meaning): The ruling applicable to the "mafhoom" is opposite to the ruling applicable to the "mantooq". It has categories: "mafhoom as-sifah" (description), "mafhoom al-laqab" (title), "mafhoom ash-shart" (condition), "mafhoom al-ghāyah" (purpose), "mafhoom al-adad" (number), and others.
