قيام الليل
‘Abdullāh ibn Buraydah reported that his father heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The Witr prayer is a duty, so whoever does not perform it is not one of us. The Witr prayer is a duty, so whoever does not perform it is not one of us. The Witr prayer is a duty, so whoever does not perform it is not one of us."
عن عبد الله بن بريدة، عن أبيه، قال: سمعت رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يقول: «الوِتر حَقٌّ، فَمَن لم يُوتر فليس مِنَّا، الوِتر حَقٌّ، فَمَن لم يُوتر فليس مِنَّا، الوتر حَقٌّ، فَمَن لم يُوتر فليس مِنَّا».
شرح الحديث :
Explanation of the Hadīth: "The Witr prayer is a duty" means that it is established and confirmed by the Sunnah and divine legislation. It can also mean it is obligatory but in the sense that its permissibility is confirmed. This is because there are other Hadīths, which explicitly indicate that Witr is not obligatory. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned Muslims against abandoning Witr praying by saying: "So whoever does not perform it is not one of us". It does not mean that one becomes a disbeliever for not praying Witr; rather, it means that one is not following the Prophet's Sunnah and methodology. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his statement three times in order to add further emphasis and confirmation to the ruling. In fact, a group of scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) classified this Hadīth as weak, so it does not entail any sort of contradiction.
