Abu ‘Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) besieged the people of Taif and put them under the mangonel for seventeen days.

شرح الحديث :

Abu ‘Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that after the battle of Hunayn had ended, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) besieged the people of Thaqīf who lived in Taif. They were inaccessible because they were inside a fortress. Their siege took Muslims longer than expected, so some Companions suggested that the mangonel be used against the fortress. The Muslims stayed for seventeen days. Other reports say that they stayed longer than that but could not conquer the fortress, so they left. There is no doubt that using the mangonel results in unintentional casualties in women, children, old people, worshipers in their hermitages and monasteries, and the like. This is permissible by way of committing the lesser of two evils. Indeed, killing women and children is evil; however, halting Jihad in the cause of Allah is worse, so the lesser evil is committed. Still, it takes place as collateral damage, not as the original purpose.
