Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah reported: Habībah the daughter of Sahl was married to Thābit ibn Qays ibn Shammās al-Ansāri and she disliked him, because he was an ugly man. She came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot look at him. If it were not for my fear of Allah, Exalted and Glorified, I would spit in his face." So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you return the garden that he gave to you as a dowry to him?" She said: ‘Yes.’ So, he summoned him. She gave his garden back to him and the Prophet separated between them. That was the first Khul‘ in Islam.
The female Companion Habībah bint Sahl (may Allah be pleased with her) was the wife of Thābit ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him). However, she hated staying with him, because he was ugly. She said that if she did not fear Allah, she would spit in his face, but she did not, because she knew that it was forbidden. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made her an offer: if she gave Qays the garden back that he had given her as a dowry, she would be separated from him, as there was no benefit in her staying with him. That was the first incident of first Khul‘ in Islam.
