Abu Mūsa al-Hilāli reported from his father that a woman gave birth while she was traveling with her husband. Her milk did not flow so the husband started sucking it and spitting it out, and some milk went down his throat. So, he went to Abu Mūsa and asked him about that. Abu Mūsa said: "She has become forbidden for you." The man then went to Ibn Mas‘ūd and asked him. Ibn Mas‘ūd said: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Only the breastfeeding that grows the flesh and strengthens the bones causes prohibition.'"
The Hadīth stated that a woman gave birth but her milk did not come out to breastfeed her baby, so her husband suckled her breast hoping that this would help the milk flow. While doing so, some milk entered his throat and he was afraid that this could mean that his wife became prohibited for him. Hence, he first asked Abu Mūsa (may Allah be pleased with him) who confirmed his fears. However, when he went to Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) he told him that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stated that breastfeeding only forbids marriage when it has effect on the child’s physical growth. In other words, this Hadīth proves that only pre-weaning breastfeeding is regarded as effective in establishing prohibition according to the Shariah, because it strengthens the bones and causes the flesh to grow, and this is possible in babyhood only.
