A calf that has completed its first year of age and started its second year.
"Tabee‘" (yearling calf) is a calf that has completed its first year and entered the second one. It was called thus because it still follows its mother, or, according to another opinion, because its horns lie behind the ears. In Maliki Fiqh, a "tabee‘" is the calf that has completed its second year and entered the third. "Tabee‘" is the offspring of a "baqarah", a term that refers to a cow, whether domesticated or wild or male or female. It is also used by the scholars to refer to a buffalo; and they treat cows and buffaloes alike in terms of Shariah rulings.
"Tabee‘" (fem. tabee‘ah): follower. Derived from "ittibā‘", which means following another, tracing. A one-year-old calf is called "tabee‘" because it follows its mother around and walks behind it.
