الشرح المختصر :

"Salāt al-mareed" (prayer of the sick) is a prayer performed in a certain manner by a sick person because he is unable to stand, sit, lay on his side, etc. "Salāt al-mareed" varies according to the type of illness. Therefore, anyone who is not able to pray standing can pray in a sitting position. If he cannot sit, then he can perform prayer while laying on his side and facing the "qiblah" (prayer direction). Bowing and prostration in this case will be in the form of a head movement, which should be lower for prostration than for bowing. If he is not able to do any of this, then he can pray (by moving) with his eyes and make the intention in his heart. The sick person should never stop praying as long as his mind is sound, and he should perform it according to his ability. The criterion for sickness, which allows the Muslim to pray in this manner, is the sickness that causes hardship and difficulty for the person (to pray in the normal way).
